Text Box: “Our method of growing grapes starts in the ground”
Prior to planting our vines we till the soil during the spring and fall seasons. Tilling helps to soften the soil so roots from the newly planted vines spread easier.
Keeping the grass low promotes less fungus & pests and lets air circulate freely through the vineyard. After the grass is cut, grass clippings in vineyard rows help to keep the soil moist by working as mulch.
Keeping weeds out of the vineyard can be a challenge at times so we combine a couple of approaches to this important task. Based on a schedule, we use a couple of herbicide applications and then complete the job with an in row tiller. This method slows the growth cycle of weeds in our vineyards and keeps us happy.
Soil biology is a very important factor in grape growing. Prior to planting and during the first couple of years of a vine, we apply granular fertilizer to bring nutrients at optimum levels. When the vine has reached maturity we apply compost to the soil in order to aid in vine nutrition.

This row has just been tilled.  No herbicides were used to achieve this.  Regular tilling/weed management will eventually reduce the  growth of weeds.
